Project Vriksha Sena

Derived from Sanskrit, Vriksha means tree and Sena means army—together symbolizing a collective force working towards environmental restoration. Project Vriksha Sena is an initiative by Samashti Foundation to build a growing “green army” of students, individuals, institutions, and communities committed to planting trees, nurturing them, and inspiring others to care for the environment.

The project goes beyond one-time plantation drives by creating a sense of ownership and long-term responsibility. Through activities such as tree plantation and clean-up drives (plogging), participants actively restore green spaces by clearing plastic waste, preparing land, and planting saplings themselves. This hands-on involvement fosters teamwork, environmental awareness, and a deeper connection with nature.

A unique aspect of Vriksha Sena is its focus on combining community action with technology-driven and data-based approaches. The initiative encourages students and young professionals to participate in innovation-led activities such as poster presentations, sustainability challenges, hackathons, and idea competitions focused on solving real-world environmental and agricultural problems. These platforms help generate scalable solutions while creating awareness about how technology can support sustainability.

The project also aims to build simple data-driven systems—such as tracking planted saplings, monitoring survival rates, mapping green cover, and measuring environmental impact. This not only improves accountability and transparency but also enables better decision-making and long-term planning.

Alongside action and innovation, Vriksha Sena emphasizes behavioral change through Zero Waste awareness sessions. Participants learn about waste segregation, reducing plastic use, reusing materials, and avoiding single-use products. They are encouraged to adopt sustainable habits and become ambassadors who influence their communities.

By collaborating with schools, colleges, corporates, and community groups, Vriksha Sena is building a network of environmentally conscious individuals who take action, innovate, and lead change. The vision is to grow this “tree army” into a powerful movement that combines grassroots action, youth engagement, and technology to create lasting environmental and social impact.
